The sky is blown out, and the photo isn’t cropped which distracts from the subject. Solution (right): The sun is behind the clouds, creating a softer, more pleasant light. Owl also gets lost in the background of the dirt. Solution (right): Photo is taken while lying on the ground and closer to the owl. The subject is now separated from the background, and the low perspective connects us with the owl emotionally giving it a sense of power. Note: The only element I was unhappy with in the final photo, is the sky. The sky is somewhat of a boring background. If there was a dark, blurry forest in the background (or even if there were some interesting clouds in the sky) I think it would improve this photo greatly. Unfortunately this was all I had to work with. Towsley Canyon is the best place in Santa Clarita to view these bubbling tar/asphalt pits. There are two small tar pits on the trail itself, and one larger area (my favorite) that is just below the main trail, see the above diagram for their locations. Tar pits are natural pools of asphalt that form in the presence of oil, which is created when organic matter is subject to pressure underground. Fractures in the rock layers below allow for this black, sticky tar to rise up to the surface. The presence of oil here is exactly why there is a long history of oil drilling in Towsley Canyon. Towsley Canyon is the best place in Santa Clarita to view these bubbling tar/asphalt pits. There are two small tar pits on the trail itself, and one larger area (my favorite) that is just below the main trail, see the above diagram for their locations. Tar pits are natural pools of asphalt that form in the presence of oil, which is created when organic matter is subject to pressure underground. Fractures in the rock layers below allow for this black, sticky tar to rise up to the surface. The presence of oil here is exactly why there is a long history of oil drilling in Towsley Canyon. tried sewing seeds to this relatively soon after collecting them in June of 2024. Germination didn’t take long. It’s initial growth seems to be lateral, sending out one or two horizontal stalks along the ground before turning 90 degrees and shooting up little stalks of leaves that are shiny and thin. The vegetation on these, at least while young, is very fragile and soft, more-so than other California natives.
