Franklin Canyon Park

2600 Franklin Canyon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Introduction

This 605-acre oasis of forest and nature is located right in the heart of Los Angeles, between the San Fernando Valley and Beverly Hills. Yet this 3-acre reservoir feels miles away from the city. It’s a great little escape from the hustle of urban life where you can spot local wildlife and go for a nice walk around the water. If you’re looking for that taste of nature without the drive, look no further than Franklin Canyon Park.

Wildlife Highlights

Our favorite activity here is to walk around the reservoir/lake and duck pond. It’s a 20-30 minute loop depending on how often you stop. The best place to look for critters is along the waters edge. You’re almost guaranteed to spot lots of painted turtles and even bullfrogs! If you’re really lucky you may even spot wood ducks or mandarin ducks in these areas! It’s a great place to bring kids and the loop is an easy walk.

Red-Eared Slider Turtle Franklin Canyon Park

The Red-Eared Sliders here are a favorite. They love to bask in the sun on the floating logs. They’re usually easier to see in the duck pond, but sometimes they gather in large groups at the lake as well. Be careful, there are some turtles that are used to being fed, they will swim up to you and try to bite your fingers if you’re not careful.

American Bullfrog Franklin Canyon Park

The reservoir is filled with American Bullfrogs, many times you can hear them before you can actually see them. The best way to find them is to walk around the main reservoir and scan the water’s edge for any funny shapes. They shouldn’t be too hard to find. They’ll usually stand completely still, sometimes allowing you to get close enough for a good photo. These bullfrogs are actually invasive species here, and only native to the Southeast United States.

If you’re interested in a longer hike, there are 5-miles of trails that wrap around the surrounding hills, away from the water. These are a little more challenging than the lake loop, and it’s a little harder to find wildlife. Fortunately, these trails have plenty of shade, for those hot California days.

If you’re interested in other activities, there’s a large picnic area adjacent to the parking lot for family barbecues. There’s also a nature center with animal exhibits, an auditorium and an amphitheater where events are held.

Logistics

Parking is on the North side of the lake, if it’s full (it rarely is) you can always park in any of the pullouts along the main road. Parking is free. There are two entrances to the park, one from the North (if coming from the Valley) and one from the South (if coming from Beverly Hills).
